Multiple PhD, postdoctoral, and undergraduate research opportunities are available in the LOGICS Lab at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
Anticipated starting date: Fall 2026, Spring 2027 or another mutually agreed date.
We welcome applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical or environmental engineering, computer science, or a related field. Candidates interested in electrochemistry, batteries, electrocatalysis, interfacial science, operando characterization, laboratory automation, or data-driven materials discovery are particularly encouraged to apply.
Formal applications must be submitted to the HKUST PhD Program in Chemistry through the university’s research postgraduate admissions system. Early inquiries and applications are encouraged.
Funding opportunities: Admitted full-time research postgraduate students may be considered for the HKUST Postgraduate Studentship. Outstanding applicants may also be eligible for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, the HKUST RedBird PhD Award, tuition support, and other university or external scholarships.
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a closely related discipline. A strong publication record and demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas are desirable:
Electrochemical energy storage or conversion
Surface and interfacial science
Advanced materials synthesis and characterization
Operando or multimodal characterization
Scientific automation, robotics, or high-throughput experimentation
Machine learning and data-driven materials research
Competitive candidates may also be supported in applying for external fellowship programs, including fellowship schemes administered by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) and other international funding organizations.
Motivated HKUST undergraduate students are welcome to participate in research projects during the academic year or summer. Opportunities may be available through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), final-year projects, or other project-based arrangements. HKUST’s UROP supports faculty-supervised research during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

Relevant Skills and Experience: Depending on the position and project, relevant experience may include electrochemical methods, battery fabrication and testing, materials synthesis, spectroscopy, microscopy, surface analysis, computational modeling, laboratory automation, programming, or machine learning.
Applicants are not expected to possess expertise in every area. Intellectual curiosity, creativity, research rigor, and a willingness to work across disciplinary boundaries are especially valued.
